I’m sure people remember the horrific story a few years ago about a young Indian woman who was gang raped and murdered on a bus. That story shocked the world and quite rightly disgusted a lot of people. Since then, India has had its reputation tarnished, and is looked at as being one of the worst places in the world for sexual assaults. Well recently, India’s women’s minister visited Sweden and pointed out some sad facts.
Gandhi began her short visit to Sweden by claiming that India is among the countries with the least number of rapes in the world. “We have four rapes per 100,000 women, while Sweden has more than 130,” she said in an interview with Swedish television network, SVT on Sunday.
The problem of rape in India was highlighted in 2012 when a young woman died after a gang rape on a bus in Delhi. Since then a number of high-profile sexual assaults has further tarnished India’s reputation.
However, according to Gandhi, the resultant huge protests in the country has created greater awareness among the public and led to more women daring to report rape. However, Indian women’s rights advocates are likely to criticise Gandhi’s comments – they claim that there is still a huge problem with unreported rape in India.
Rape is a sensitive subject and the BBC documentary “India’s Daughter” about the rape in Delhi, was banned in India earlier this year.
Gandhi is visiting Sweden to inaugurate Namaste Stockholm, a festival organised by the Indian embassy to showcase India as a culture and tourism hub. She will also participate in a discussion on gender diversity.
Now I don’t know if the statistics she posted were correct. Even from what I’ve read, 130 out of every 100,000 seems far too high for Sweden. However, I think it’s important that she’s actually pointing out what’s really going on. The world has rightly condemned what’s been happening to women in India, but I never hear people talking about what’s going on in Sweden. In fact, most genuinely don’t even know about it, and whenever I tell them, they’re completely shocked.
I think the reason why is obvious of course. The world at large doesn’t care when the victims are white women, unless the perpetrators are white men of course. Then you would never hear the end of it. In Sweden however, the victims are almost always native whites and the perpetrators 99% of the time are either Arabs or blacks. Seeing as this is the case, it can’t ever be mentioned because it would draw too much attention to the failures and dangers of multiculturalism. In India on the other hand, the women are non-white so it’s OK to draw attention to their suffering.
Every day the double standard gets more and more obvious.
